Kids Benefit From Strength Training Exercises

As children return to school, there may be something new in your child’s physical education class.
Strength training exercises that are supervised, safe and age-appropriate offer many bonuses to young athletes.

In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Sports Medicine supports strength training for kids, if it’s done properly.
One group of 7th graders is getting more than a workout during P.E. class.
They’re learning the proper techniques for strength training, which is not to be confused with weightlifting or bodybuilding.
“Everything we do is high repetitions, very low weight — increasing the flexibility, muscle endurance. We certainly are not trying to increase muscle mass at this age group by any means,” said Kris Palmerton, the athletic director at Pace Academy.
Lifting heavy weights can result in injury, including straining young muscles, tendons and growth plates.
Experts believe middle school-aged students have the right skills and body development to follow his program.

Still, it’s important to keep a close eye on the class, watching for mistakes.

“That’s the key is learning how to use the machines properly, proper extension, contraction of the muscle,” Palmerton said.
The proper training will help their performance in other sports.
The exercises can also lead to better heart and lung function, lower cholesterol, stronger bones and a fitness habit that could last well beyond 7th grade.

Gwen’s the muscle in the force

The 41-year-old is serving a six-week stint with Bellarine police but away from the station she is a world class body builder.
Last year, Sen-Constable Carbone won the heavyweight title at the World Natural Bodybuilding Championships in New York.
She was also crowned overall champion after the initial winner tested positive to drugs and was disqualified.
The win came less than a year after the seemingly light framed policewoman, who stands at just 163cm, started training for competitions at coach Michael Tabban’s Richmond gym.
Sen-Constable Carbone, who is normally based in Melbourne with the Victoria Police Critical Incident Response Team, said she started the sport almost by accident.
“I’m at the force response unit and there’s a pretty high fitness standard you have to maintain. I came from the prosecutions office and had started getting fit when people suggested that I should start competing,” she said.
“I did five competitions last year, mainly in the figure sections but they said I was too muscular and should enter the bodybuilding section, so I did and I ended up winning the world title in New York.”
Sen-Constable Carbone said her muscular physique had also come in handy on the job.
“Some crooks are a little bit surprised at my strength because I’m so small. They think they can play up but I’ve got a vice like grip, so that helps when you’re making an arrest,” she said.
“I’m in my off season now but I stayed in that ripped figure for eight months. I compete at 57kg and I weigh about 61kg in the off season but I still look very athletic.”
Plenty of work has gone in to sculpting that figure.
Away from crime fighting, Sen-Constable Carbone finds time to fit in seven days of training a week and stick to her strict diet of oats, boiled chicken, salad and rice in the six-week lead up to competitions.
There will be plenty of that this year as she weighs up an offer to compete on the professional card.
“I’ll probably do the whole WNBF series, so I’ll be aiming for the state championships in October and if I get a good result there I’ll move on to the nationals and then go and defend my title in New York,” she said.
Down the track, Sen-Constable Carbone said she would one day like to work permanently in the region after enjoying her introduction to the region with the Bellarine crew.
“It (Bellarine) is a good station, full of nice people,” she said.
“We have a holiday house in Ocean Grove but I’d love to live down here and to work in Geelong would be sensational.

Bodybuilding Routine

The body building routine means what types of exercises, in how many sets or how many repetitions that you will be undergoing for training each of your muscles. For instance, 3 sets of the flat bench press, 3 sets of the incline bench press and 2 sets of flat bench dumbbell flyes that you will be doing for the chest weight lifting routines. The workout split describes that how you have planned to divide your workout routines. Also like on what day you will be doing exercise for what particular muscle, to be more precise like you will be doing biceps, back and legs on Mondays and doing triceps, shoulders and chest on Tuesdays could be termed as workout split.
The basic notion behind designing the body building routine is that you better ensure that you split all the workouts so that you may not do any overtraining. Doing exercises or workouts haphazardly like chest on Monday, triceps on Tuesday and shoulders on Wednesday would over-train your triceps because just about every chest and shoulder exercise workouts the triceps are secondary. So in short you will be required to do just 1 of the 3 things when preparing your workout routines and splits.

Try to work chest, triceps and shoulders on the same day and biceps and back on the same day so it’s okay if the secondary muscles get exercised on the same day since you are doing them anyway.

Split those muscles that work the secondary muscle so that they are sufficiently away to over-train you, for instance, do chest on Mondays, triceps on Wednesdays and shoulders on Fridays and include biceps on Mondays with chest and back either on Wednesdays or Fridays.

Some of the suggestions for the splits made by the expert body builders, once the body builder understands the basics of the workout routines and the splits and programs, he can easily set his own routines as it is not the intricate science anyway. However, appended below are the few sample split routines and workout program that are widely practiced and used by many body builders:

Monday Chest / Triceps, Tuesday off, Wednesday Biceps / Back, Thursdays off, Friday Shoulders / Legs, Saturdays and Sundays off.

Monday Chest / Biceps, Tuesday off, Wednesday Shoulders / Legs, Thursday off, Friday Back / Triceps, Saturday and Sunday off.

Monday Chest / Back, Tuesday Shoulders, Wednesday off, Thursday Biceps / Triceps, Friday Legs, Saturday and Sunday off.

These are just a few sample splits and programs that may help you to great extent. However, majority of the body builders avoid working out and exercising on the weekends whereas there are some people especially prefer the most for undergoing their workouts and exercises during the weekends. Anyway, it entirely depends on the individual body builder that on what days of the week he can spare proper time for his workouts and what days he does not prefer exercising during the week. Accordingly he should plan his body building routines.

Bodybuilding Can Save your Life

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

The whole purpose of bodybuilding was to relearn the rules of nature to re-establish of form of life commensurate with the past. …
People will shop interminably, ask endless questions and spend a lot of money to buy today’s luxuries like big screen TV’s, VCR’s and desktop computers and laptops. and once this sophisticated electronic gear is installed, they impulsively poke at keys and buttons on the chance that they can make it work with little or no reference to the manuals. They learn to live with equipment that functions minimally. It’s of no great concern because they won’t be punished for their indifference.

In a similar way, they shrug off their physical functions. Their hurry-up world has steered them away from the performance of their physical machine so delicately designed for healthy survival on this planet. Let their cars sputter for a moment on the freeway and they waste no time heading for the repair shop. Yet, when they find themselves out of breath after climbing a flight of stairs, they disregard the symptom, preferring not to consult the body’s manual of operation.

They grab pills instead, on the chance that one of them might work. Like their half used electronic devices, their bodies remain at a low level of performance.

We are biologically wired at birth with a warranty of threescore years and ten, but we tend to ignore the fine print with its numerous disclaimers. With proper care and maintenance, we can live far beyond the warranty. When we hit the wrong key, nature makes little allowance for the error. We get stamped with the deficiency, and we have to live with it. If the error is too great we may not live.

We can live longer or die sooner. The choice is ours. We can be either active or sedentary. It has always been the ethic of bodybuilders to plumb the depths of human physical behavior to determine a lifestyle that would ensure optimum function. Truths that have existed since time began have been ignored by modern man. Our forebears must have done the right thing to have handed us the legacy of life. The whole purpose of bodybuilding was to relearn the rules of nature to re-establish of form of life commensurate with the past. Primitive cultures and previous civilizations must have been faced with the same task, and they evidently came through with flying colors.

As bodybuilders, we learned long ago the importance of exercise, a balanced diet, proper rest, mental activity and peace of mind in ensuring a long and productive life. As a rule, bodybuilders going into their 70’s and 80’s today remain functional, healthy and independent. Bodybuilding has always been a form of re-search. The bodybuilding community itself was a great experimental group. We learned a lot by experience. We discovered things for ourselves, not waiting for scientists to do it for us. Today, we enjoy the benefits from both.

We knew you had to be fit to survive. There is no place for weakness. The laws of nature are fixed, finite and unforgiving. Early people had no drugs, or antibiotics to cure infectious diseases. They had to rely on their lifestyles as hard working athletes. Too many of today’s people have grown soft and dependent on scientific cures. Perhaps they live longer, but they have also become victims of incipient diseases due to their modern degenerative lifestyles.

Perhaps the greatest age related loss affecting health and daily activity is the loss of strength and total muscle mass. It comes as no surprise to us that scientists have recently observed the health benefits from strength training from people of all ages. In fact, the older you are, the more significant the health benefits.

With less muscle mass, your metabolic rate is lower, which means you must eat fewer calories to maintain a healthy weight. Which also means you get fewer nutrients and run the risk of becoming nutritionally deficient. Also, making matters worse is the increased need for certain nutrients with advancing age. Thus, the loss of muscle mass in the elderly is particularly alarming.

You can build muscle at any age. The sooner you get started the better. Every decade of your life has pitfalls that can be avoided by what you did previously. The bodybuilding you do today prepares you better for the threats awaiting you in the future.

If you don’t consult the manual and hit the right keys for the precisely functioning human machine presented to you at birth, you face life threatening consequences. I think the bodybuilding lifestyle is precisely what you need to keep your body up and running in perfection to the full extent of your warranty – and beyond
